What is it and where does it come from?
Silicone is a polymer of organic rubber, which can be in three forms namely, gel, liquid and solid.
Silicone is often confused with the word Silicon. The latter is a naturally occurring element that is found in abundant quantities on earth. In fact it makes up 94% of the top 14 km of the earth’s crust. Silicone contains silicon and has many of its physical and chemical properties.
The main features of silicone are long life, superior reliability, stability and extreme temperature adaptability. Silicone is present in many household items because it is inert, which means it does not react with other elements or compounds under normal conditions. In other words, silicone does not react with food items or hot and cold beverages.
By and large, there are no known health hazards of silicone and it is completely safe for human beings. Silicone is not biodegradable, but it can be recycled easily.
Silicone comes in three grades, which are industrial grade, food-grade silicone and medical grade silicone. Medical grade silicone is generally used in bottle nipples and pacifiers for infants. On the other hand, BYO Coffee Cups, food containers and cooking utensils are made of food grade silicone.
Silicone is easy to clean, is microwave friendly and environment friendly.
